Behavior management techniques are directly applicable to individuals with dementia or to their caregivers in the form of educational interventions. They are based on the modification of constellations triggering the target behavior, reinforcement of desired behaviors, establishment of behavioral routines, use of relaxation techniques and teaching of communication skills. Mounting evidence points out that behavior management has beneficial effects on reducing challenging behaviors, enhancing cares’ confidence in managing the behavior and last but not least on caregivers’ mental balance and wellbeing. Especially in frontotemporal dementia, interventions focused on social situation simplification, noise and stimulation reduction, avoidance of access to problematic items (e. g. credit cards), revitalization of old hobbies, occupational therapy and music therapy have been positively evaluated.
