Dit heeft sociaal, economisch grote gevolgen en de druk op het zorgdomein zal hierdoor sterk stijgen. De ziekte van Alzheimer en andere vormen van dementie hebben door deze toename en kosten grote impact op de samenleving en zijn speerpunt binnen de gezondheidzorg in EU-lidstaten. Door deze impact van de problematiek hebben veel Europese landen nationale dementie plannen gelanceerd. Deze plannen omvatten vele initiatieven die in de zorg moeten worden uitgevoerd. In de meer welvarende landen, wordt nieuwe technologie ontwikkeld en ingevoerd.
